At Emerald City Eats, we believe the best way to enjoy wine is to match it with great food. Smash Wine Bar & Bistro in Wallingford does just that. At Smash, Chef/Owner Dana Hannon has created a wine bar where you don’t have to sacrifice eating the best for drinking the best – at Smash you have both in abundance. And for today’s Daily Dish, we offer to you ...
$46 for $75 worth of food and drinks at Smash Wine Bar & Bistro! That's 39% off!
A night out at a wine bar can be intimidating for some.
Do I sip then swirl?
Am I still cool if you get the House Red?
Will anyone notice I can’t pronounce “Gewürztraminer”?
But at Smash Wine Bar & Bistro, you can check your wine bar fears at the door. This quaint Wallingford wine bar is much like the neighborhood it sits in – classy, yet casual.
With its warm green interior walls and café-style seating, snobbery has no place here. Whether or not you can name your favorite AVA, Smash makes everyone feel welcome.
Much like Dana.
In her signature white chef’s coat, and hair up in a bun, Chef/Owner Dana Hannon is the life-blood of Smash.
Finding her is easy. She’s behind the bar, opening a fresh bottle of Efesté “Ceidleigh” Syrah (Columbia Valley).
Or she’s at a table, recommending the best wine to pair with the “French Connection” cheese plate (the Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir, perhaps?).
And often she’s back in the kitchen, making sure the menu she personally crafted is brought to life with the flavor and flare she intended.
“I’m all over the place,” Dana said one night as she rang up an order.
Did I mention she’s sometimes your cashier too?
Yes, though Smash does have an able staff – ever-ready to fill you in and fill you up – Dana is everywhere. And that’s just the way she likes it.
“I wanted to be hands on in all aspects of my business,” she said. “So I now run the kitchen as well as the wine program and front of the house.”
With 23 years in the restaurant business, Dana brings to Smash talents she cultivated at notable establishments such as Cascadia, Schwartz Bros. Restaurants and Dahlia Lounge. In 2006, she and Cascadia co-worker Jeffrey Dorgan (now Wine Director at Willows Lodge) opened Smash with the belief that anyone who walks in can find something they love at Smash.
And what’s not to love? Smash’s delightfully delicious assortment of Forks and Corks has something to please any pallet.
With a robust wine list, featuring flavors from both around the world and here at home, Dana or sommelier Eric Comstock can help you choose the best wine to match your mood or your food.
“Smash pays more attention to their menu and food items than most wine bars,” said Paul Wacker, president of the Seattle Wine Club group on Facebook, who loves Smash’s duck and shiitake egg rolls, saying, “they’re a very nice treat to start off a meal.”
And when you’re ready to get started, it all starts in the “Nibbles” menu. Here, choose from favorites like the melt-in-your mouth Yukon Gold “Pot-Tots” Cakes with Crème Fraîche, bacon and chives ($7) or the gimme-more Crostini, served with goat cheese, heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil ($9)
Next up is the “Few Bites” choices, where the herbivore in you will hanker for the Romaine salad, served with tangy romano, garlic croutons and roasted garlic dressing($8), or the Organic Greens, co-mingled with almonds, apple, and dried cranberries, then tossed with lemon vinaigrette and croutons ($8).
And just when you thought the indulgences would never end, the “Big Bites” menu brings on gastro-pleasures like the warm-gooey goodness of Smash’s Truffled Oregon White Cheddar Macaroni and Cheese ($15), and the slow-cooked Cassoulet, with duck confit, lamb sausage, white beans and thyme oil ($14).
These dishes are designed to be easily shared or horded for one, but don’t forget to peruse the cheese flight menu, where the “Bold Spain,” “Domestication,” and aforementioned “French Connection” flights are served with baguette, crackers, honey and apple.
With all that’s worth trying at Smash, and you owe it to yourself to check them out. Seattle is lucky to have so many fine wine bars to choose from, but at Smash Wine Bar & Bistro, you come for the wine and stay for the food.
Smash Wine Bar & Bistro is located on Wallingford’s main drag, North 45th Street, and sits on the corner of Interlake Ave. N. Our advice is to avoid N. 45th St. during high traffic times … which are almost always. From the North, you’re better off taking the N. 50 St. exit and coming down Stone Way N. From the South, take the N. 45th St. exit, then jaunt left if you can down to N. 40th St., then come up Stone Way N. to N. 45th St. The most readily-available parking is on Interlake Ave. N.
